Glendalough
Just because I was hiding behind the sofa last time you found me doesn’t mean I’ll be there next time
I’ll start with some photographs to set the scene and then explain
I’ve been to Glendalough twice now. It is an amazing place. Founded by a hermit by the name of Kevin it wasn’t long before he was joined by others seeking God in this beautiful valley.
A community of prayer formed, which was unusual in that it welcomed married couple and thus was about families rather than celibate monks. Glendalough became a major missionary sending training centre, partly responsible for the re-evangelisation of England. It must be remembered that these were Celtic believers, not Catholics. The community lasted almost a thousand years.
I visited whilst the Reading Boiler Room was in existence and 24-7 was in it’s heyday, so the connection to a place of prayer was significant to me and I’d put my toe in the water so to speak.
There is still an amazing peace in the valley, but it was here that I “heard” the Lord say something profound to me. As I stood by the lake imagining Kevin and his fellows experiencing God’s presence, but looking at ruins, I said to Him, “You’re not here now are you“. To which he replied, “Just because I was hiding behind the sofa last time you found me doesn’t mean I’ll be there next time“
