Christianity and Islam Pt 1 Co-existence?
I have had a number of conversations with Moslems of various denominations and shades of opinion from liberal to more fundamental. Moslems, like Christians, do not all share the same beliefs, values and attitudes. Some are happy to co-exist, believing as the Koran says, that Christians and Jews are “people of the book” and not “unbelievers” (infidels) as such. Others have been quite happy to state that if I do not convert I am going to hell and that the punishment for leaving Islam to become a Christian should be death. You can’t get more diverse than that!
I firmly believe that many Moslems are only “cultural” Moslems. By that I mean that they were “born Moslems“, rather like so many Europeans and Americans might call themselves Christians but have no real personal faith, just a set of social/cultural worldviews.
Sadly I have been sworn at by two ‘Moslems’ on separate occasions while “at the cross“. On one occasion I had got into quite a long and latterly strident conversation with a young man who threatened me with physical harm should I ever be found alone! As he walked away I said “Salaam”. His response? “F*** your peace”. Now, I am sure that if he actually attends even Mosque, his Imam would rebuke him severely, but the encounter stays with me.
It concerns me that in areas where there is a high density of Moslems such thinking and attitudes could be rife among younger men. I am made very aware of the “bias” this has created in myself so that whenever I see a group of young “asylum seekers” on the street, and there are many, I am uneasy.
A truly major problem arises when Sharia is applied to a whole nation such that to disbelieve is actually illegal. This was the experience of this lovely lady who found Christ.
The folllowing is a long debate demonstrating that intellectually we can be incredibly brilliant, yet miss the truth which only comes by revelation. Islam and Christianity are quite simply incompatible. They can sit in different places for different people, but they can’t mix. We have much in common in terms of morality but world’s apart in terms of understanding what God expects and how we can be “saved”.
Bottom line – Allah is not YaHWeH (Jehovah), i.e. the God of the Bible and the god of the Quran are not the same. Mohammad does not offer a guarantee of salvation, Jesus does. It is why Moslems convert!
